Review of the ASICS Gel Contend 5

The ASICS Gel Contend 5 : A Complete Review

The ASICS Gel Contend 5 does not showcase the technology to trigger worldwide athletic headaches but, in this release, ASICS promises to keep you comfortable and cushioned by each and every move. ASICS presents perhaps the most affordable running/walking shoe in the market. Not only the price but the overall shoe is quite reasonable within the budget constraint. On that note, let’s divulge into the details.

Sizing

When buying clothing or running shoes in this case, there’s always a risk that the shoe won’t match the size. Well, with Asics Gel-Contend 5, you will be pretty much safe. So here Asics Gel-Contend 5 definitely didn’t disappoint us. The general perception about the shoe is that the fit of the shoe is actually decent. The length is true-to-size, and the toebox is adequate in size. The heel of the shoe is normal, not loose nor tight. However, the midfoot is tight, and the overlays are rigid, which does not help flex on the longer runs.

This running shoe gained fans for becoming highly comfortable and agreeable to wear. The width profiles were welcomed, as were the secure upper and the accommodating underfoot cushioning unit. On the other hand, a handful of consumers didn’t sit well with the available sizes, claiming that they were smaller than the usual fare.

While some other customers say these shoes have very nice/comfortable insoles, great for long walks l, however, they are so narrow and tight in the middle, that they feel like a noose around your foot. The toebox too, it’s very tight. People who had the normal size of 10.5 had to try 10.5 4EE and 11 4EE and they both were too tight. But all in all most of the customers found it adequate in terms of sizing and comfort.

The Look

The solid rubber outsole provides surprisingly good traction on a variety of surfaces for a road shoe, and while it looks a little chunky to the eye, it delivers a decent level of flexibility and responsiveness underfoot. At the bottom of the sole unit is a thick layer of solid rubber. This material is great for durability. The other part of this rubber is that it is not blown rubber, and thus is a much harder material.

Moreover, the removable ORTHOLITE™ sock liner and athletic mesh keep you fresh for longer periods of time. It weighs only 10.25 ounces, has a heel height of 22mm and the forefoot height is 12mm. Built for the maintenance of durability at soft densities, offering increased adaptability, versatility, and comfort for natural activity. They also have a gel cushion underneath the heel. The upper seams are subtle and scarcely evident, which is lovely. The top of the shoes is pretty nice, except for two negative things. The materials used are not of the highest quality but are appropriate. The mesh is appealing and bends well all over. The top uses overlays to provide support and assistance.

The Feel

You can be assured of the comfort and safety of your GEL-CONTEND 5 shoe when most of it is desired. At the bottom of the sole unit is a thick layer of solid rubber. This material is great for durability, because of the thickness of it. But the bottom layer of solid rubber is noticeable during those longer miles as your impact does not have the softened landing that some of the more expensive versions do. The other part of this rubber is that it is not blown rubber, and thus is a much harder material. They have also included a Gel cushion under the heel. Built for the maintenance of durability at soft densities, offering increased adaptability, versatility, and comfort for natural activity. They also have a gel cushion underneath the heel. What really is perfect if you’re a runner with a heel strike.

However, this Gel cushion does not extend past the immediate heel and if you are not a heel-strike runner, it just ends up being extra weight with no benefit. It’s something of an under-sell for a shoe that different testers feedback shows is proof that you don’t need a second mortgage to find a decent pair of running shoes, with an all-round performance that means you’d be hard-pressed to peg it as a budget shoe without seeing the price tag. ‘Probably the best value shoe I have ever worn,’ said one tester, while another was ‘shocked (in a good way) at the price’ and another reckoned they had ‘run in worse shoes that cost double the price’.

Supination Support

Pronation is part of the natural movement of the human body and refers to the way your foot rolls inward for impact distribution upon landing. Understanding your pronation type can help you find a comfortable running shoe. The GEL-Contend 5 is made for Underpronation and Neutral. In this pronation, the outer side of the heel hits the ground at an increased angle with little or no normal pronation, causing a large transmission of shock through the lower leg.

Beyond that, one of the biggest complaints people have about the upper is the collar. The collar is still and does not cushion the ankle or Achilles well. Instead, the collar extension (used to help put the shoes on) is stiff and stabbed into the runner’s Achilles Tendon during runs. This is not that noticeable during shorter runs, but as soon as you go past about 5 miles, people would notice increased irritation on their Achilles.

The ASICS Gel Contend 5 feels light and comfy.

The ASICS Gel Contend 5 is a discount trainer but does not punch enough to ensure a sale. This footwear doesn’t help during the long kilometers and wears out pretty quickly.
